3 Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? 4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. - Romans 6:3-4 (KJV)
This verse is not talking about water baptism as many teach, but is talking about being baptized (placed into) the body of Christ (the church). There are several different baptisms (Hebrews 6:2), and several different ones that do the baptism. John the Baptist spoke of Jesus as the one who would baptize us with the Holy Spirit (Matthew 3:11), and Paul said the Holy Spirit is the one that baptized us into the body of Christ (1 Corinthians 12:13). Neither of these are talking of water baptism, although Jesus told us to be water baptized (Matthew 28:19), so we need to obey His command to assure our eternal salvation (Hebrews 5:9).
This verse is telling us that as Christ was raised up from the dead, so we should be raised up into a new life free from sin (Romans 6:6). Our sin nature was crucified with Christ, and buried with Him, so we no longer have a sin nature, and should not be compelled to sin, if truly born again. All Christians will still sin occasionally, but since our nature is changed, we should always repent when we do sin, and ask God to cleanse us (1 John 1:9). When a Christian sins, it does not affect their salvation (unless it is blasphemy against the Holy Ghost or disobedience to Jesus), but it does open the door to the devil (Romans 6:16), and the devil comes into your life to destroy you (John 10:10). Once you are born again you have the very Spirit of Jesus living in you (Galatians 4:6), and it remains righteous even if you sin. If you are truly born again, you will want to live holy, as He is holy (1 Peter 1:15-16). Praise God for our salvation.
