Daily Devotional

March 28

21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God. 22 Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. - Eph 5:21-23 (KJV)

Notice that both husband and wife are to submit themselves one to another, and “in the fear of God”. These verses go on to say that the husband is to love his wife, as Christ has loved the church (Ephesians 5:25), so this commitment is for both the wife and husband.

The wife is commanded to submit to your husband, not to men in general as some try to teach. This submission is meant to be only in physical matters, and does not mean wives are to disobey the Word of God in any way. A wife can submit without obeying, if it is not godly, as Peter also did (Acts 4:19) when he was told to quit preaching Jesus. Wives are to obey God above all, and then submit to their own husbands, as the church is submitted to Christ.

God in Genesis created the man first, and then the woman was created from the man’s rib (Genesis 2:22), and was created for the man (Genesis 2:18). Verses like these are meant to help us live in the marriage relationship, and a true godly marriage would see the man and woman both submitting one to the other, and only when there was a conflict concerning physical matters, would the man’s opinion dominate. If a man uses these verses to try to dominate his wife, then he is missing the whole point, as if the man truly loves the woman as Christ loves the church, then he would be the provider and protector of the woman, not the dictator. If we would all just love one another with God’s kind of love (John 13:34), then submission wouldn’t even be a problem. Praise God for His Word and Love.
