4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, 5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; 6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. - 1 Cor 13:4-7 (KJV)
Charity, as used in the Bible, is referring to God’s type of love, which is an unconditional love. He loves us because He is love (1 John 4:8), and not because we are so lovely. This type of love (charity), is a love that is shown, not just in words, but in actions – a demonstrated type of love. These verses are the most detailed explanation of God’s type of love in the Bible. We, who are born again, have this love in our new, born again, spirits, as it is one of the fruit of the spirit (Galatians 5:22). We can let this love flow out of us to others, if we will just die to ourselves, and let Christ live through us. Jesus said that He was meek and lowly in heart (Matthew 11:29), and if you study His life while He was on the earth, you will see that He showed this unconditional love to all He ministered to. He forgave all the sinners, and the only ones He rebuked, were the Pharisees, Lawyers and Scribes (Matthew 16:2-4), as they were self-righteous.
If we could just fill ourselves with this type of love, and if we all could exhibit all the traits given above, what a wonderful world it would be. If you can really know the above love, and have received it yourself, then you can find a true happiness that is better than you will ever find any other way (John 13:17). When a believer can stay full of the charity kind of love, which is being full of God, and let it flow through him, then he will experience the peace and happiness that only Christ can bring you. It is something that we all search for, all our lives, and many try to find it in material goods, drugs, alcohol, and other ways, but it is only found when you come to the end of yourself, and find God. The joy and peace that you will then experience, is something I don’t have the words to describe, but when you find it, you will know it, and quit looking anywhere else. It is truly a blessing beyond measure (Ephesians 3:17-19). Thank you Lord, for these many blessings to your children!
