Daily Devotional

February 28

1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. - 1 Cor 13:1-3 (KJV)

First we need to define what the bible calls charity. It is the God’s kind of (AGAPE) love, that is a totally unconditional love, given toward us by God without our earning it, or being worthy of it. It is God choosing to love us, for no other reason, than God is love (1 John 4:8), not because we are lovely. Paul is saying that even if we speak in tongues, and have the Spiritual Gift of tongues, if we don’t have charity, it is just making noise, and not of any benefit to anyone.

Paul is saying in these verses, that if we have the baptism of the Holy Ghost, and are operating in the power of Him (Luke 24:49), through the imparted Gifts of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:7-10), if we operate in the Gifts without using charity (God’s kind of love), then we are nothing, and our use of the Gifts are fruitless. This includes our giving money to the church, working in the church, and everything else we do for the Lord. If we do those things out of love then it will benefit us, but if we do things for the Lord out of a feeling of obligation, or to earn something from God, it will not benefit us at all. When we give and do things for the Lord out of love, then we will benefit from it, and all the promises from the Bible will apply to our actions. But if we do the same actions out of a works mentality, trying to please God, or earn His favor, then it will not profit us at all, and the promises of the Bible will not apply to those actions. It is all about our heart attitude, and not just what we do. The fruit of our salvation is love and obedience to Jesus (Hebrews 5:9). Do everything out of love for God, and you will reap the benefits the Bible promises, as God cannot lie (Titus 1:2) – Praise God!
