14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God? 15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance. - Heb 9:14-15 (KJV)

The verses before these have been comparing the Old Testament sacrifices with the New Testament sacrifice of Jesus. The sacrifice of Jesus was so much greater than the sacrifices of animals, that it should not even be compared. Jesus was the sinless Son of God (1 Peter 2:22), and was able to fulfill the entire law (Matthew 5:17) and stay sinless through the power of the Holy Spirit. As John the Baptist said, He was the Lamb of God, that takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29). All the sacrificed animals had to be spotless and perfect, and our sacrificed lamb had to be the same. Jesus fulfilled the requirement perfectly and His sacrifice of Himself completely atoned for all our sins (1 John 2:2) – past, present and future ones.

Jesus is the mediator of the New Testament, and He is our mediator before God, and He has completely reconciled us to the Father (John 17:2-3). All of us have failed to fulfill all the requirements of the Old Testament Law, and therefore have come short of being righteous before God (Romans 3:23), as we can not ever live up to His Holy standards on our own. This is why Jesus had to come and die for us, so that we might receive His righteousness, through our new born again spirits, and appear holy before the Father. Jesus did what we couldn’t do, so that we might be reconciled to God (John 17:3). Notice that Jesus enabled us to receive “eternal inheritance”, not just temporary inheritance until we sin again, as long as we obey Him (Hebrews 5:9) – Praise God for His mercy and grace!
