11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. - 1 Cor 12:11 (KJV)

In the preceding verses 8-10, Paul has listed some of the Spiritual Gifts given to Christians by the Holy Spirit. They are, word of wisdom, word of knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discerning of spirits, tongues, and interpretation of tongues. The Holy Spirit gives these gifts to Christians “as he will”, meaning that He decides who shall get each gift, and even though we can strive for the gift we want (1 Corinthians 12:31), it is up to the Holy Spirit as to what gifts He will give us. The “severally” means that we can receive more than one gift and the Christian can operate in several of the gifts at the same time.

Many churches have said that the gifts of the Spirit are no longer needed, or available to us now, but that they passed away with the Apostles, but that is just not so. Pastors that teach that these Gifts are no longer for us, are doing so just because they don’t have them, and therefore are not able to demonstrate the power of God in their lives. Paul taught that the Word of God was not in our speech, but was made evident in the power of God (1 Corinthians 4:20). If Jesus and the early church needed the healing and miracles that they demonstrated, to prove that it was from God (John 10:25), then how can we not need the same demonstrations of power in our preaching? We have the scriptures to teach us how we need to represent our Lord, and we need to follow its directions. Praise God for His Word!
