26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath: 27 Neither give place to the devil. - Eph 4:26-27 (KJV)
This verse is taught incorrectly most of the time. People teach that God knows we are human and get angry some of the time, but that we must repent before sundown. That is not what this is saying, as God does not say it is okay to be angry during the day, but not at night. There is a righteous type of anger that Jesus showed when He drove the merchandisers out of God’s Temple and overturned the money changers tables (Matthew 21:12). Jesus was angry but did not sin, as His anger was righteous. God gave us the ability to get angry, but we are not supposed to use it against people. Righteous anger is when we get mad at the devil, and all the things he causes. You should not get angry at people (Romans 12:18), but at the demon in them that is coming against you.
This verse is saying that you should get angry at the devil, and never let your anger at him stop, but keep that anger at all times. This is the right use of our anger, and is not sin. If you get angry at people, that is sin, but if your anger is toward the evil that people do, and not at them personally, then that is a righteous anger. When people come against you and try to hurt you through their actions or words, you need to realize that it is not the person doing it, but it is the devil that is using them. The Bible makes it clear that if we are walking in faith, and living a righteous life, the devil will come against us and we will suffer persecution (2 Timothy 3:12). It is not us personally that the devil comes against, but it is the Spirit of Jesus that lives within us, that upsets the devil so much. Thank you Jesus for giving us power over the devil and all his ways (James 4:7)!
