Chickens are super cool animals. They are evolved velociraptors. Chickens take 3 weeks (21 days) to hatch. In order to hatch chickens correctly, you have to make sure the temp is 99.5-101.5 and 55-65% humidity. Sexing baby chicks isn't easy, because chickens don't actually have a "penis". When a rooster mates with a hen, he mounts her and, standing on her back, lowers his cloaca (vent) and the hen inverts her own cloaca to meet with his. There is no penetration, but the sperm packet released by the male is taken into the hen's cloaca or vent. A lot of English sayings come from chickens... "Cocky" "pecking order" "mad as a wet hen" and more.

Chickens are fascinating! They will eat mice and some small snakes. Hens can lay an egg even without a rooster being present. They are great for pest control!

Chicken eggs come in a variety of colors, including copper (copper maran), blue (Americuana), green (Easter eggers) varieties of brown, and white. There are a lot of different chicken breeds for many purposes. Layers lay lots of eggs, meat birds for meat, and game birds were really bred for fighting.

Love em too! Not only for the eggs but for the entertainment too. The wife and i will sit on the back patio, drink beer and watch them do chicken stuff. Im currently in process of building a new coop as the old one was shot (that hungry bear didnt help it). Once i get it closer to being done ill put some pics up of the process of building it. I wanted to build my own with all the features that would make it easier to manage and take care of chickens. Hopefully ill have it done within a few weeks.

Yess! We are modifying our coop soon for the ladies. We have 6 full grown, 2 grow outs, 15 in the incubator on week 2. We are going to have to make a new coop!! Mine free-range during the day.

I want to raise chickens for the "free" eggs

My eggs are way better than store bought. I would recommend it!

I hate chickens. Loud, messy, smelly, stupid creatures. Eggs are cheap and chicken feed is not cheap. Roosters will often attack and harass hens until they die, and will often attack humans as well.

It is really nice to be "self sufficient" and "make your own eggs", i support that, but it isnt cost effective in my experience, and it can be labor intensive, and thats not counting if you get some real motherfucker chickens that dont coop up at night and attack when you feed them.

Just my 2 cents on the demon bird known as chicken

My chickens aren't smelly. Maybe If they're cooped up for a long period of time. Roosters are rude and mean, I cull the ones who attack people. If you have enough hens they shouldn't harass them much. In my experience, they have been wonderful. Great fertilizer. But to each their own I guess.

It's also AMAZING for the soil. One of the top natural fertilizers.
