They will be pets for the most part. And as a bonus we get some eggs. We have tons of chickens at the farm, but we decided to get some for our yard.

5 Barred Rock Pullets 2 Silver Laced Wyandotte (Straight Run) 1 White Rock Rooster

On April 1st we'll be getting a few more 2 Light Brahma Pullets 2 Americana Pullets 2 Breasted Bronze Turkeys (Straight Run)

Still trying to find a couple Ocellated Turkeys

Keep a close eye on them. The breeders have been under so much pressure that the chicks are becoming inbred. My wife has gotten chickens the past 3 years, and almost all of them went nuts or had major health issues and had to be culled

So far they all appear to be pretty healthy. I think one of the Wyandottes might have stunted growth though.

So we get to name them?

Sure. We only have 2 of 8 named right now. And we still have another 6 on the way. I need some good names for the turkeys.

As a mostly city person my whole life, I'm curious how well do having yard chickens helps with insect control around your house and yard?

They eat the bugs so you get eggs. Also, they do wonders for the soil quality.

I'm hoping they will help cut back on some of the earwigs around my house. We have close to 30 free range chickens at the farm and I hardly ever get bit by mosquitoes while I'm there. I've watched them destroy and eat an entire yellow jacket nest before too.
