That's why the passcodes are so long now. With limited attempts granted, four digits is more than enough. The long passcode is to encourage you to use the scanner.

I'd try to change your mind but I agree with you.

I'll try to change your mind about the motivation. They didn't do it for government agencies, they did it because they want data about you. Any data. All data. It doesn't matter if it's useful right now or not, they want everything, your lifestyle, your family, friends, secrets, fingerprint, localisation, facial characteristics, DNA. The government is part of the system, so obviously they will play good guy/bad guy a bit, and then provide the data. But it was not engineered for this purpose, it was engineered to know everything about you, giving them more tools to profit on you.

^ This right here.

Government Surveillance is at most a secondary benefit to this whole thing, they want literally every single scrap of data on you because some day it might become profitable.

The problem is that many people seem to tunnel vision on the "government bad" part but totally turn a blind eye to the megacorperations behind the scene that puppet the government. Every time I see a lolbert scream about statists and muh guberment but then is totally fine with Google, Microsoft, Amazon, and Apple recording them every moment of their lives I know they're an idiot.

There is no longer a separation between Big Government and Big Business, Jewgle or Faceberg effectively can invalidate a candidate by refuses to show their ads, this is not a democracy, it's an oligarchy, and the ones at the top are Jews.

I wonder if I could convince data scientists to use deep learning on finger prints to try to predict shopping habits. It could work if you can figure out a race from a finger print.

You can set up your iPhone to use a passcode to unlock and then fingerprint scan to open any apps once the phone is unlocked. That’s how I have mine set up.

They still have your fingerprint then.

Courts have been flip-flopping on the requirement to use your finger or thumb to open an electronic device.

I don't think that the FBI would have a problem getting your fingerprints if they really wanted to get them.

Does the OP have anything other than a hunch that PW are getting longer to move people toward biometric data?

[–] 0 pt

Nope. Just a hunch. But if it wasn't about biometric data then they would have let you control how long it is in case you would prefer to get in easily.

Just use Android, you just have a lot more control over it. Plus Apple's evil, they make the older phones slow, they make new chargers for new devices different shapes so you can't re-use them, Apple products in general feel like an electrical car, too simple and when broken, can't be fixed. But Android is like a gas operated car brakes after 4 years, fix it up and it runs fro 2 or 3 more years. I kept my Motorola smart-phone for 5 and a half years.

I happen to believe that google is more eviler. They are in more of a position to monopolize many layers of the tech lasagna. They have search. They have most of video. Their browser share is approaching 90%. They have the majority of phone operating systems. It would be very easy to make the mistake of handing them that.

Apple has nothing cornered at all and therefor aren't a real threat.

Now that I think about it, that sounds kind of right.

I agree with you. I don't even feel like Devil's advocate. This has to be exactly the reason.
