I had kind of assumed the newspapers were probably already dropping him in 2015 when he started rooting for Trump. That's not to say he started saying controversial things for the money, but, y'know, it's a little easier to take a stand on something once you've got less to lose. Guy probably made bank on Dilbert, saw that he was past the peak of that, and said "fuck it."
But yeah who knows maybe this was the last straw for some newspaper somewhere. Dropping Dilbert is the kind of thing some old people would probably cancel their paper subscription over.
