Because that's idol worship. Jesus and his apostles show in NUMEROUS places in the New Testament how and to whom to pray. At no point to they pray to ANY authority or person other than our Lord and Jesus.
How is asking someone to pray for me akin to idol worship? If I ask you to pray for me, would that be me worshipping you as an idol? also, Mary is not an idol, she is a person.
Matthew 4:10 10 Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan! For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.’[a]”
By praying to someone other than Jesus or the father, you are serving a false God/Idol.
you are not answering the question:
If I ask you to pray for me, would that be me worshipping you as an idol?
the answer is no, because I am not worshipping you, I am asking you to intercede on my behalf. That is how Catholics view Mary. She is a person, and we are asking her to pray to God on our behalf.
Your attribution of idol-worship is false and incorrect. Mary is a person who is very close to God. We Catholics just ask her to pray to God on our behalf.
