Lots of cars are Turbo 3 now. You'd be surprised. Many Japanese manufacturer's have been using forced induction 3s for years now.
The Trax is designed to meet other markets (Asia / Europe) and sold here. It did well in its initial sales because of price point solely. But GM is known for many many years of pushing garbage at a low price
Allegedly, the Trax is designed to boost CAFE numbers to offset all the trucks they sell. It doesn't make it any better. There's also not as many turbo 3 out there. The manufacturers that don't have large truck fleets, have more NA 4 cylinders.
Either way, I'm convinced CAFE needs major reform or removal.
Well. Take a look at FNA (Fiat North America - (Stelantis' North American Operation)). It lost money due to CAFE standards, for 2 years at least before Stellantis stepped in to make them meet them to avoid the fines.
They've always had horrible mileage and meh trannies with assembly line workers that drink and smoke dope at lunch. They aren't on my list.
