Yes, it's a Subaru. If you're changing the oil on a Subaru, then use an OEM filter. The aftermarket stuff is trash.
You can buy them by the case (12) for about $100 from online Subaru parts dealers, and they usually come with the crush washer for the drain plug. Make sure to use a new one each time on that as well.
Funny too, I remember when I worked at Subaru the old folks would come in and do exactly what you said, buying cases of filter and occasionally oil at a time.
There's no real reason not to. If nothing else, then for the washers.
I do the same thing with filters for my Focus. Just buy a case of them at a time and be done with it, unless Advance Auto has their "5 quart + Filter" special on the Motorcraft stuff, then I'll usually pick up a couple of those.
What oil do you use? I had settled in high mile mobile 1 but I'm curious
