I use OEM filters. Sometimes you have to get them from a dealer, but you can usually get (some) domestics at the parts store.
Especially on the one car that has the filter on the top and no drainback valve. All aftermarket garbage isn't made right.
Filter in the top
My Subaru has a vertical mounted filter, is that what you mean?
Yes, it's a Subaru. If you're changing the oil on a Subaru, then use an OEM filter. The aftermarket stuff is trash.
You can buy them by the case (12) for about $100 from online Subaru parts dealers, and they usually come with the crush washer for the drain plug. Make sure to use a new one each time on that as well.
Funny too, I remember when I worked at Subaru the old folks would come in and do exactly what you said, buying cases of filter and occasionally oil at a time.
