Straddle a ditch, slide some plywood under it. Only way I've ever done it. Of course I've never owned a gazillion dollar vehicle worth paying someone to work on either.

I had a very basic working pit in the garage of my old house. The original owner built it. Really handy but I had to use a sump pump to keep the floor "dry" in the non-winter months. Had a step ladder to get in and out. Great if you have someone working with you to move the car.
