I think auto parts have gone to shit faster than any other product line. I'd sooner trust an original part off a high mileage junkyard car that's been in a wreck than many of the current aftermarket products. Event things like batteries and windshield wipers seem to have gone to shit. I thought we had those problems solved 20 years ago.
There's strange financial fuckery going on when I can get a shitty new alternator with a lifetime warranty for 1/3 the price of getting the alternator rebuilt at a local shop. Then the calculation becomes what are the odds that some dipshit with vax brain is going to slam into my car and total it before the cheap alternator dies? The other part of the calculation is how much it sucks to replace a given part now that I know how to do it. In general, only learn how much the job sucks after the job is done turning that into a relative unknown.
