I'm pretty sure we understand why the wheels stay on cars at this point, so that makes this kind of failure even stranger.

OK, I'm going to just come out and say that car makers can't be so stupid that they think electric cars are actually going to sell. They are not brain-dead, they must know better than that. Electric cars DO NOT WORK in many circumstances and conditions that cannot be avoided by drivers. They simply will not do the required job. Most people already know this, and it's not going to take the rest of the public, who may be innocent, long to find it out.

Electric cars make no sense at all in most situations. They can be used by those who want to pay twice as much as they would pay for a gasoline driven car, to get only half the utility, and only if these people live in warm parts of the country without hills. But you can't really tow anything heavy with an electric car -- not because it doesn't have the power, but because towing uses up the charge in the battery much too quickly.

When people find out that they need to replace their weakening battery pack, which after two years will only give them a range of 50 miles or so, and that it will cost them 30,000 dollars to do it, they are not going to be happy, and they are not going to want to own an electric car. This is to say nothing about waiting for an hour or more for the car to charge, if they can get access to a charging station on the road.
