I’m dying here. Real life allies don’t exist. I hate my existence.

I keep trying. You guys see me sharing fun videos of dad drumming. Even that has turned into chaos.

I don’t know what to do. Dad is racing towards being constantly unmanageable. No one has power of attorney. I have one ally, my “step-uncle.”

I don’t know how I can continue this.

If this sounds familiar to anyone, please reach out to me.

See if there is a legal clinic for elder law in your area, maybe check with a nearby university law school. This is most pertinent of there are other people trying to take advantage of the situation or if his safety is coming into question.

Thank you. I just didn't know what to do.

Is there a will? If they're mentally incompetent, the will may specify who has the ability to make decisions for the estate.

The will only lists who signs off on things when he dies, and lists beneficiaries.

What OP needed was a Power of Attorney, but if his dad is already losing it, no good lawyer will issue one because they are required to ensure the person singing it is of sound mind.

Sometimes if you can declare someone mentally incompetent, the terms of the will can be enforced beforehand.

A question I never wanted to ask about. I came in blind. I’ve started taking forward steps this past few weeks. Thank you.

Sure. States and localities vary, but a will (or living will) may give you powers to manage the estate when the writer is incompetent. IANAL and this is not intended as medical advice, but a good family lawyer and a couple hours of time should be able to give you the answers you need.

I have to continue to research this. I am. It’s fucked to be held responsible for everything but have no legit say so in anything.

Did your father provide a will, POA, enough resources to fund any specialized care, and communicate to the family who would do what?

If he did, this will be emotionally difficult but logistically simple.

If he didnt, why are you white knighting for irresponsible baby boomers? Do not save people who spent decades creating their problem.

Took this time to save myself and reach out. Have help. Working on it. Thank you.

Definitely check with an elder care attorney to see what you can and can't do. Has there been an official medical diagnosis? Official diagnosis is crucial.

Check with his medical coverage-it may pay for a nurse to come in to observe and make official recommendations (more documentation the better for you).

Avoid government provided in home caregivers like the plague they are. Private pay caregivers or assisted living are the only ways to go. Some assisted living will accept Medicare after you've done private pay for a certain number of years.

Sorry you're dealing with this. It fucking sucks.

Working on it with help. Reached out to the one trusted person. Thank you.
