If you’ve followed me over the past couple years, you’ll know I moved from my house to help dad. I’m constantly coming up with little ideas to help him remain independent.

We recently went in on a new house to cohabitate because, well, even being just a couple acres away still wasn’t working.

So, this has been difficult. And this is a bit of venting because I can’t even talk to my siblings about dad because they only call for money. And he never gives them guilt when they finally call. I can appreciate that so much.

Anyway, custom labels have been so helpful. My latest hack has been to help him stop turning off all the wrong breakers when he trips the one for his bathroom.

He often trips his bathroom breaker when he plugs in too much shit. Think about an older person who is still cold when it’s 85!degrees outside and the temp in the house climbs and climbs.

So, he will plug too much shit in, like a space heater and hair dryer, trip his bathroom breaker, then flip every other breaker in the house.

This results in shutting off the power in the office and my bedroom. This is detrimental to my work because my computer is often working unattended as it processes audio and video editing jobs for clients.

Anyway, I made this label and it fixed the problem. I haven’t experienced going back to my work, only to see the computer restarted, in a week. It’s promising.

I’ve made these custom labels for things in the kitchen, for the Smart TVs, and more.

These little thermal printers can be had for $25-$50. A real life saver. I have a couple of them that print different sizes. Totally worth it.

It gives me a way to not embarrass him by just saying I’ll pop a label on it and it’s no big deal. They work.

An old lion is still a lion. And part of protecting your aging loved ones is to help them without embarrassing them. This is especially true (and difficult) when it’s a man.

I learned it’s awful to try to stamp things in his head because it’s hard for him to remember things. I label medicine organizers, breakers, things in the fridge, tools, filing cabinets anbd and anccordians, etc. It really helps.
