When I moved out here, last year, I was excited to hear my dad play the drums again. He told me he just can’t do it anymore due to age and health issues.

He started selling all his equipment. He had two nice acoustic sets and two electronic sets. He sold and was down to one electronic set.

I figured out he gave up because he just couldn’t figure out how to hook it up anymore. I don’t know shit about playing the drums, but I can figure out how to hook up electronics.

I helped set it up and plug in everything. That was the issue. He was so hyped when it was ready and working. This man had been a drummer for 50+ years. In his youth, he played in shows, competed in nationwide Battle Of The Band contests against famous acts, and played in traveling and small bands up into his 60’s.

He can still play. He was just frustrated and sad he could piece things together.

This made me so happy. And this was two days ago. Tonight, I went over to his house and he was programming his kits.

Very awesome!

Right on dude, best story of the day, thank you! The ol’ man still has it!

He does! He wants me to feed him some songs I like so he can practice and play them for me. I’m big into 80’s tunes. He’s practicing Simple Minds - Don’t You (forget about me).

I’m gonna share here.

To see how excited he is to have his passion presented to him makes me so happy. And he is so humble and thankful. It just pulls at my heart.

If you’ve seen any of my other posts about him in this sub I created, you’ll know how much I love him and he always lets me know how much he appreciates me.

Damn near every night he says, “I don’t know if I thanked you for….”

Caught the one last month. The fact I’m at that age where friends and relatives are dropping I had to take a look. It is a startling reminder of your mortality.

I was caretaker for my mom, stepdad and an aunt. One after the other across a seven year period. Boy oh boy is it a roller coaster of emotions. Took a lot out of me to be honest. The two women were at times very difficult, but the ol’ man was easy. The night before he passed we shared a smoke and a shot of whiskey. He reached his hand out for mine and thanked me for being so good to him. I’m thinking are you kidding me, you took on a woman with three boys and gave us the best life you could. He worked his ass off for us, my God it was the least I could do to help him in his time of need. He was a good man, the best of men. I still miss him.

So yeah, I know where you’re coming from. Warms the heart to see and hear the joy you bring to your dad. Yes indeed it does. I am…..well, was a pretty damn good guitar player, but have been struck down with rheumatoid arthritis for almost a year now. Suddenly I couldn’t play at all, my fingers just won’t work anymore. Sitting in my living room with amps and guitars all around was so depressing I had to pack them all up and into a spare bedroom. Not a day goes by that I don’t find myself wanting to just grab a guitar and play. Believe me when I say what you’re doing for your ol’ daddy is fuk’n HUGE and GOD BLESS YOU FOR IT! Watching your ol’ man jump right into those songs tear’d me right up you fuk’r. I’ll be watching for more.

Thanks for sharing. Yeah, the inevitable is a real bitch. My mom is having issues as well. I don’t mention her on here because I just feel it’s different than talking about pops and one of my brothers and his wife care for her.

The arthritis sounds absolutely awful. I had to look it up. I honestly didn’t know it was an autoimmune issue. I hope you can get some relief from that.

And yes, I’ll def share some more drum footage when it happens. Thinking soon but he has a procedure I’m driving him to tomorrow that may lay him up through the weekend.

Not sure if he or you are zeppelin fans but get him to listen to or learn

I'm not a drummer but such a sick groove. Hopefully my kid will follow my steps into music and I'll lean them towards playing drums (I'm a guitarist) would love to have a family band :-P

Good on you mate, maybe get him to teach you a simple beat I'm sure he'd love it

Inb4 zeppelin hate

He’s not gonna be able to play until next week when he gets the stitches out from todays procedure, but he was listening to that song tonight in preparation.

He definite likes Zepplin. That’s what he grew up with. If I can get him to play along with it I’ll send you a link to the clip!
