So dad has two dogs now. An old, large breed and a small, young dumb yapper. A decade ago he had two cats, 3 small dogs and 2 large dogs. I’m grateful the herd has thinned. His house used to stink of animals and most of them spent far too much time in kennels.

Of these two, both get love and attention, and are fed well, but hygiene is an issue. After about a month of trying to get them to the vet and get cleaned and groomed, I took action. The small one had a skin issue. Got it to the vet and gave it the prescribed medicine for a week. She’s doing better. The big ole girl just stinks.

I brushed, bathed and cut out all the clumps on the small one. She will go to the groomer next week even if I have to “steal” her.

The big one will be bathed tonight. The excuse from dad was it’s too cold outside now and putting her in the tub will lead to the tub getting scraped up. I’m going to put towels over the tub the just put them in the wash after. She’s a big girl and strong. Hopefully she will let me control her in the tub. I’ll find out in a couple hours.

Anyway, his pets are just another thing I hadn’t thought of before I started taking care of dad. And another thing I have to take charge of because putting it off isn’t okay.

Fingers crossed.

She’s just turned 12. She’s an old girl. I let dad talk me out of it tonight. He wanted to feed me what he made for thanksgiving and to play some games on our phones. I’m going to wash the dog this weekend no matter if he tried to get me to put it off or not.

Invest in a brush called the Furminator. If you brush the dog with that frequently, it does a really good job of getting the dead/shedding fur out and pulling the stink out with it. Give the dog a really good brushing (you will basically get a whole dog worth of fur) before the bath to keep the drain cleaner, clean the dog faster and less fur means she will dry faster. If you have a portable heater and point it at her bed (cover it in towels before she lays down) she will like the heat and lay there and get dried off a lot faster.

I can do all that. I have to drive to the trash dump tomorrow so I’ll hit up the stores to get what I need.

The big reward will be her being fresh and clean and I will put up the dog steps for her to get on the bed with dad. They both will love that.

If you’re reading this and are against pets on furniture, especially on your bed, I know. I get it. That doesn’t matter at this point.

I'm not against that at all. If your dad is all by himself, he needs those animals. They're social animals and they sleep together, they are your dads family members and nothing wrong with sleeping beside him.
