I thought they already voted to secede.

Is this one of those political string-alongs? Like where they voted to have a vote and then they vote but it's only a preliminary vote to a vote and they they actually vote but it doesn't count because in Canada you can't vote on odd Tuesdays and then they have a rehearsal for the real vote and so on and so on?

They reached the number of signatures for a referendum vote. Anything else that you might have heard do not matter, if there's a different premiere, then that premiere is compelled to do the referendum vote. They just announced that one of the issues that will be voted on will be to secede from Canada. Liberals are always going to pull some tricks, but it's going to happen.

Edit: fuck me. I am mistaken. They announced what would be in the October referendum vote and not on the vote is Alberta independence. The only thing that people wanted to vote is not happening.

Thanks for the clarification. These things are always so hard to follow and so disappointing when you hear "They voted to secede!" but it's just a stupid click-baity statement.

So you think it'll actually happen? I mean, it does make sense. Are we legitimately looking at a 51st state of Alberta or an entirely independent country of Alberta? I don't think the latter would be allowed by the Canadian government and they'd have a civil war. Well, likely not given that Canadians are, for the most part, pretty chill and passive.

First: it's a vote for independence, but the vote to become 51 will come soon after. Ottawa will niggle Alberta in every legal and illegal way that it can. And then (((Trump))) will give them an offer and Alberta will bite hard. Second : the reason that I'm calm about this is that, Carney is not doing anything real to stop this from happening. We know that the political tactic of mocking your opponent and never addressing their grievances HAS NEVER SUCCEEDED. And that's why I'm sure that Alberta will leave.
