The very definition of Metis is a mixed race of aboriginal and European ancestry. That's how many there are, they get their own official racial definition.

The Metis are spread all over the country. After nearly a half millennium of cross breeding, they are a mix of all shapes and sizes. A large number of them appear white as French and English Canadians. Canada also had successive waves of European immigration from England right across to Russia. The land itself is nearly identical, and for a long time it was free if you would settle on it.

Technically my entire family is Metis - probably at least a fifth to a third of White Canadians are - but you have to know exactly what to look for to see it.

The lack of record keeping makes verification impossible in many cases. The point being, we've been cross breeding with these Indians for four hundred years. There are some records dating back that far. However, illiteracy was also common, especially outside of European settlements. The Indians themselves were never much in the way of record keeping. In many of the smaller White communities, the only records that remain are old church records.
