This is exactly why I won't go to organized protests now. I've always been prepared to accept the risk of getting beaned by an errant rock thrown by some puppet. But now the risk of getting clocked hard by the very people sworn to protect us is too great. And by "sworn to protect us" I mean "paid to protect the fascist tyrants that the puppets voted into office".
Or you go prepared, and prepared to defend yourself and others in kind. They won't stop until we stop them. Not going to the rally is giving them exactly what they want.
Go up against, likely numerous, well trained and fully outfitted cops? No thanks. If there's no chance it will be a fair fight then I am either leaving or not showing up in the first place. There's too much at stake. Not to mention what good am I to my family as a brain damaged invalid when the fighting really starts.
Sure there are vids of lone guys getting the upper hand but those are the exception. Cops are generally not going to intentionally put themselves into a situation where there's a chance it's not going to go their way. Even in this video it's clear the cop has full control. Presumably the guy won't stop running his mouth so the cop let's him have it.
But you are 100% right; the real issue here is that this is exactly what they want. Namely to win by submission.
