It's honestly less that and more another expression of my general distaste towards internet upvote-downvote systems - same reason as I used adblock to rid myself of the buttons and the associated scores. I don't see much value in general measures of popularity.
At some point I'll probably expand the script I'm using to override the css and add in borders and backgrounds on a per-username basis - and that is ninety percent motivated by my belief that admins need to be somehow distinguishable, so's one knows where to send the griping when something's broke.

As for username colors, they have the advantage of distinguishing fake accounts from real ones.
