I wouldn't bother with AI. When using transportation technology, a simple "yes it arrived"/"no it didn't arrive" sensor at the exit portal is sufficient. It's only necessary to have rudimentary AI if you expect to determine that what came out of the exit portal is a reasonable facsimile of what went in.
I guess it really depends on your expectations. If you simply expect an output, then AI is not needed.
If A goes in and you expect A to come out then no AI is needed at all. So if a human that has X amount of cells enters then a human that has X amount of cells leaves. AI is not and doesn't need to be involved with.
Exactly. A simple electric eye beam is perfect.
Of course, what comes out may be a slurry of cellular mass, but I just deal in yes/no things.

Obliterated? Hmm. I'd suggest checking the field on the portal itself. You may need to adjust the focus of the output coils.
