My mom lived in NZ for a while. It was the same there. I asked why. She said they have socialized medicine but it doesn't cover dental. Since it's not free, most don't bother with it.
When she moved back to America she went to a dental school to get all the work done she needed. Root canals, crowns, fillings. Her teeth were perfectly straight but a rotten mess at 20. She says she doesn't even remember her parents making her brush her teeth as a kid.

Gross...
Hygiene is one of the first things a kid should be taught.
Yep. She made sure my brother and I knew the importance. I had some bad experiences with dentists. I didn't go for 20 years. I had one small cavity when I did start going again a year ago and it was in a far back tooth that the dentist said would be hard to reach because I still have my wisdom teeth. I know to brush morning and before bed and if they even feel the slightest bit gross.
Canadians are in the same boat but don't have fucked up teeth (at least from my experiences there).
Probably taught dental hygiene. Mom said it wasn't even mentioned.
just awful
