Crows are way smarter than those other black animals. Slightly OT ... Did you know that a flock of crows is called a "murder"? I wonder how that came to be.

It's folklore that crows convened a congress to judge and punish members of the flock that caused trouble. Punishment was death, or murder. Therefore, a flock of crows is a murder(er).

I didn't know that part. Thx.

The crows in my area hold a yearly congress along a row of tall fir trees. One by one they arrive and perch at the top of a tree. New arrivals are either allowed to land in a particular tree or not, and some are not allowed to land at all.
A crow that does not obey the rules is chased off by several others birds. This whole process takes around an hour, it's fascinating to watch.

That's just their algorithm

That's a fancy way of saying crows are in fact, racist

Don't fuck with the crows is all I can say.

I had some Bluejays in my backyard terrorizing anyone back there. One day there was a baby Bluejay that fell from their hillside tree nest, and was completely screwed becuase it could not fly and could not jump high enough to clear the 3 foot retaining wall.

The parents were screaming loud enough for me to see what was up.

I went out there, picked up the baby and put it on the top of the wall where it promptly bounced its way up to mom and dad.

Suddenly, I was no longer attacked, and the cashews I put out for them seemed to be appreciated. They didn't even wait for me to leave before coming to get them. I'm gonna assume they will return next year.

I know the bee I saved with some raw honey was told to the hive, becuase now anytime a bee is hanging out near me, it's usually exhausted and wanting honey from me.

These creatures are far smarter than we give them credit for. If they need to get rid of their bad seeds, I trust them. They do a better job than humans it seems.

Most birds seem intelligent enough to understand threat/no threat, you're well on your way to building a bluejay army.

That's cool about the bees too. I'll take either of those any day over the alternative feral apes.

Corvids are the only other animal who can solve a 3 step puzzle other than chimpanzees. Crows, Ravens, Blue Jay's, Magpies, Stellar Jay's are in the corvid family. Their intelligence comes from their food sources. Scavengers need to find new sources daily, which has developed higher intelligence.
