Avian replacement programs were started as early as the 1920s. Since they were all tube-based units, you typically got larger drones. Pelicans, Eagles, Turkeys, etc.

With the invention of the integrated computer chip they were able to make the drones even smaller. Nowadays, every bird you see is not only stupid, but is also mechanical.
