Check out a greenwing macaw, they have the best personality of the big macaws. Mini macaws are just as cool, though smaller and mostly green, but they often learn to speak better than big macaws in my experience. Caiques are clowns. If you want a clownish bird with lots of energy get a lorikeet, they are like children on meth...

The loris need nectar right? That weird diet is why I haven't looked into them. I like feeding my birds fresh whatever I have on hand when I have it and not worry when I dont. If we move to Brazil where the fruit is outside I might consider one! The eyes dilating is really weird though.

Yes, they eat nectar but will enjoy fruit with you too. Amazons will do the crazy eye thing too but when they mature can be a handful in breeding season. You can now find tons of info thanks to the internet so research Brazil really well before going there and you will need to learn to speak Portuguese which is not like Spanish as many think...

I've been studying Portuguese since February and I'm doing pretty good, I'm intermediate now and can do past and future tenses fairly well. Working on vocabulary expansion now, it's the fun part of language learning instead of the drudgery of conjugations. It's definitely not Spanish, but speaking Spanish helped tremendously with the language pickup. The down side is that my spoken Spanish is terrible now, but I can still understand it.

We've been looking into it since last November when we were also considering Alaska, and have made a few friends there, have one Brazilian friend stateside. It took from March until a couple weeks ago to get the kids passports renewed, insanely slow. Husband is going shortly to check out the houses we have been looking at online as well as scope out each area before we pull the trigger.
