Years ago I drove a 1977 IH Scout II. Got pulled over by some cops who told me my license plate light was out. Then they asked me why I laughed. I told them my vehicle was not originally equipped with a license plate light and so I wasn’t responsible for having one. They checked and sure enough there’s no light there. Then they hemmed and hawwed about it for a bit. But I reminded them that legally if the vehicle was not modified from how it came off the assembly line (and the design had been approved by the government - like lap belts in older cars) the vehicle owner has no responsibility to upgrade it. The cops were a little shocked I knew that law and had to let me go.
