One of the things I never see mentioned is that he was detained by sheriffs after being dismissed from jury duty. Jury duty was obviously a severe and unnecessary hardship for the man, and they wasted his time forcing him to show up. He likely let them know what assholes the clerk and such were for forcing him to wake up and walk there before first light only to be dismissed because of his eye problems. Sheriffs who typically work for the courts enforcing court orders were then told to harass this gentlemen. That's why it happened, and they were going to look for a reason to fuck with him regardless of how cooperative he was.
