Seems that the main reason for their cannibalism was that they would literally starve to death otherwise. A rational conclusion to that would be that their society is shit and needed to be replaced with an objectively better one. They were primative paleolithic hominids who were just clinging to survival, not just in the arid interior, but also in much more hospitable environments with climates much more similar to Europe in terms of temperature and rainfall. That they were still on the brink of starvation in such environments shows how primative they were.

Australia was once as green as South America, but tens of thousands of years of hunting animals by burning the forests to flush game turned it into a desert.
