I did that already. I'm able to run my whole house with a 6Kw split phase low frequency inverter and 10Kwh batteries. Now I don't care what the utility does. I just ordered another 10Kwh so I have ample storage. Of course, I can't run my air conditioner or electric dryer without being connected to the grid, but that's a small sacrifice.

My setup is a lot more modest. I just installed a caravan solar kit on the roof of my house for about $150 with an old car battery and a few 12V sockets. I have a few 12V appliances (desk lamps, 5V USB outlets, USB-powered alarm clock/radio, etc.) which I now use alongside mains appliances whether the grid is up or not. Cost me almost nothing and now if the grid goes down I'll notice but I won't be in the dark.

Yea, I wish I could have done that too, but my wife got involved. Next thing you know, it's all the lights, refrigerators, freezers, curling iron, TV, etc. I just gave up went to power the whole house.
