As far as I know you just need to claim you are and have an "elder" from the tribe vouch for you. There is no actual proof required. So you end up with people like Bruce Pascoe who had zero aboriginal heritage but is lauded by the left because he claims to and writes bullshit fairytales about abos inventing agriculture and living in large towns.
