There's a sensor in nearly all PEDs to detect tampering. If it "slips out of your hand" when you got to enter your PIN it'll come up "Alert Irruption" or something and then can't be used until it's returned for a security check. Sometimes a couple of knocks on a hard surface is all it takes.
