I went on one of those "Contiki vacations" once and my bus was filled with Australians. Maybe I got a bad batch. They came off like British but a notch down, like a lower, more uncouth class? Am I wrong to make this correlation... I don't know enough about Australians. Just saying as a personal experience.

Australians are much like Americans in that they sound louder when they're traveling abroad. "British but a notch down" sounds like they were probably Adelaidean Australians. Adelaide was settled by pretentious English people rather than convicts.
