Those of us who believe in equality argue women should not need to modify their behaviour, it must be men who are made to behave like decent humans.

I do not think we can wait for men to stop raping women. It breaks my heart to write this. It should not be the role of women to be forced to live their lives differently but I can’t think of another solution after a long week of reading stories about young women being sexually assaulted where alcohol has been part of the mix. The researchers tell me to be patient. I can’t be.

We know it is not all men. There are many decent men who always do the right thing, who would no more have sex with a comatose woman than plunge their body parts into boiling metal but, still, too many men who wield power and privilege use violence against women, and far too many men who don’t and won’t do anything about it.

If the age of male power is to end, then women will have to take action. I write this in despair; and know and understand it looks like I am making women repair men. But I can’t think of anything else that will work in the short term. I just can’t. Let us all, including men, continue to work on changing behaviour but that won’t protect women this Saturday night.

Sexual assault is the only crime in Australia that has not decreased. Alcohol is involved in more than half the number of sexual assaults reported to police and, according to Don Weatherburn, legendary former director of the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research and now at the University of NSW, only one in four victims of sexual assault ever reports. Former ministerial staffer Brittany Higgins is the most recent public example of a woman who could not bring herself to report the assault.

Bianca Fileborn, a lecturer in criminology from the University of Melbourne, says some research shows the rate of non-reporting can be as high as 85 per cent. Those women may have a fear of job loss but there are so many other reasons not to go to police. Fear. Shame. Exhaustion. Or an urgent desire for lives not to be consumed by the assault, even though for many many women, the damage exists past physical recovery.

Now women must seize the day. By all means, get plastered with your women friends. But when going out with men, be razor-alert. Just as you would not knowingly take the date rape drug rohypnol, don’t drink in the company of men or, at least, don’t get roaring drunk. Some men have weaponised alcohol against women. They don’t have a sign on their head that says rapist. Some of the rapists look perfectly normal.

Since Brittany Higgins accused a colleague of rape, two more women have come forward with accusations about the same man using a similar modus operandi. The man Higgins has said sexually assaulted her, allegedly followed the same modus operandi on two other occasions, rape a woman too drunk to consent. These are just the ones we know about. Bianca Fileborn reminds me women already act protectively, they check in on each other, they support each other. She urges me not to put the responsibility on women and in my heart I know she is right. Again she reminds me alcohol is just one weapon in the arsenal. And, I stress, any woman raped while intoxicated is not to blame for the actions of her rapist.

But I have lost faith in the speed of change, lost faith in systems, and heard too many stories from other women that are too shocking. Like the three amigos, staffers who worked in a high-profile ministerial office. Back in the day, these men, as the story goes, would use alcohol as a way of smoothing the path to having sex with women who were near-strangers. They awarded themselves points for having sex with staffers, more for an opposition staffer. At least one of these men had to abandon political ambitions because who knows when the Sword of Damocles would drop.

Weatherburn, now a professor with the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre and author of The Vanishing Criminal, has never belonged to the school that says it is only up to men to change. The longer-term challenge is to change male attitudes. “But all of us have to take steps to protect ourselves against physical violence. The reality is we live in a world which is, at times, extremely dangerous and we have to take preventative steps.”

Perhaps it is hyperbolic to suggest women should not drink in the company of men. No suggestion of personal responsibility in any of that.

but then.,.

" But when going out with men, be razor-alert. Just as you would not knowingly take the date rape drug rohypnol, don’t drink in the company of men or, at least, don’t get roaring drunk"

A lot of women I've met who go out and get absolutely legless turn into complete whores when that drunk, they get their tits out, start flashing people, talking about 'sucking cock' and all sorts of shit.. I wonder how many of these "85%" are experiencing day after regret for their own actions..

Apparently, the whole country is constantly raping and bashing their wives and pretty much any woman whilst on the piss according to this "study".

It's a pandemic!

Police the appallingly low standards of the responsible service of alcohol (RSA) which often produce situations of harm.

How about people be responsible for their own behaviour? There are no RSA laws in the Netherlands, Spain, UK, Germany, etc.

By all means, get plastered with your women friends.

No by all means don't debase yourself and get shit faced, it is abhorrent behaviour and even worse when you see a woman do it. Everyone has done it as a young adult, but by the time your early to mid-twenties, this destructive out of control behaviour is a defect.

But, he reiterates: “It should not take away from this message that fundamentally men’s behaviour must change and men must lead the way.”

Of course [smh].

I know you called me a cat lady once, but what my observations tell me of women in my age group is that nothing destroys a woman's looks than hard drinking. It ruins your skin and you become bloated and saggy. Toss in smoking, garbage food and late nights and you're finished.

Female physiology is different. Feminism has really shit things up to such an extent that we're now ignoring biology because it hurts feelings.

Exactly, as women's skin is different from men. Men have more sebaceous glands, larger pores, lower pH and skin can be up to 20% thicker. Men and women can tolerate different amounts of pollutants and environmental stresses not even taking into consideration body mass.

Female physiology is different.

In a nutshell.

Feminism has really shit things up to such an extent that we're now ignoring biology because it hurts feelings.

It's pretty lame when a guy can't handle their alcohol or know when to stop, IMO it's worse for a woman. Nothing screams train wreck more than a woman plastered, unable to walk, probable future victim, pissing on themselves after a day at the races.

I've never let any of my ex-gf's get hammered on the turps, its contemptible behaviour.

Being drunk or drug affected significantly increases your chance of doing stupid shit or having stupid shit done to you.

People have a personal responsibility to be in charge of their faculties. Normal fucking behaviour, I'd think? Not in this situation, apparently.

I noticed that in all the so-called rape allegations that have been on (((the news))) lately it involves a woman being blind drunk. There was a story where they were bleating about girls at elite high schools being raped as well - and in every case the girl was blind drunk. All of them were underage (which last I heard, underage drinking was illegal?)

If someone was in full control of their facilities and ended up raped because of a predator man, then yeah, I could understand the uproar - but in almost every "rape" case I've heard its either a woman blind drunk, drug affected, or she has changed her mind about consent after the fact. I guaran-fucking-tee the rape wouldn't have happened if they weren't drunk or drug affected.
