The Time Machine, by H.G. Wells, was published in 1895. While Wells would declare this to be an 'undergraduate performance', to use his own words from later in his career, the concepts of, as well as the very phrase "time machine" were born from this novella. Via a framing story, Wells describes the travels & travails of the eponymous time traveler. Examining the far future of Earth, the time traveler may encounter a world he regrets visiting.
