Hello Poal,

My laptop (Lenovo thinkpad x220) has been going strong for the last year or so, but recently it has been getting much hotter than usual. Even just browsing the internet or watching a DVD.

Do laptops need proper regular maintenance like cars? And should I pay to go get the thermal paste reapplied, etc? I can live with the increased heat, but I'm worried that the higher temperatures will decrease the lifespan of the internals. I don't really want to do it, but if I get a bunch of people screaming in unison at me to go get it done, them I'll capitulate.

I "can" do it myself, but I'd rather pay someone to do it properly and assume the risk if they brick it in the process.

Haha. That sounds like a good father son activity. Mine is still very young, but by the time I get around to doing it he'll probably be of age. I have all the grand plans laid out, but still trying to decide between oil cooling, or phase cooling. It's not necessary, but I've never had "my own PC" (laptops don't count) so I plan to go all out, maybe even integrated into the desk like this: https://www.l3p.nl/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/41-e1463255558418.jpg

I haven't had to tell my son "life's not fair" just yet, but it'll come about one day. Better to learn it - and how to accept and deal with it - as a kid than an adult.
