That being said, it is important to remember that the play is never about the action happening on the stage.
If it were, people would perform plays all the time, without an audience.
The play is only ever about eliciting a response from the audience. They are the only people in the room that matter.
plays can also be staged to divert attention from something else.
That's why you never let the audience see what's happening behind the curtain.
there's what's behind the curtain and then there's what's going upstairs in the director's office(or across town at some private club room). the bit players, stage hands and tech crew can't be trusted with too much.
