As a map afficianado, it's all about context. What is the map meant for?
scifi starmap. points marking locations and objects, plus radius markers signifying things like regions and territory

The main thing is not to clutter the map with too much data. Use of coloration and symbols can go a long way.
If it's a print map perhaps do it a a series of maps. If it's via software, consider letting the user add layers as needed.
