This one is a first for me. It wasn't my fault, the company got shut down by the state. I'm a little depressed about it. I'm sure it will be easy to find another job but probably not one as meaningful. Its got me a little bummed out. Add family drama to that and personal drama and paol drama.

Anyone else ever been laid off? How'd you feel about it?

We managed to piss off the wrong person by doing a better job than they could. It’s a sad thing but their are parts of the government that have unilateral power and can do whatever they want with accountability to no one.

it blows... hell, ive been fired when i was younger for dumb decisions.. but you know what? i always ended up better off after shitty things happened in regards to work. if you are a hard worker and not as dumb as a brick it WILL work out.

[–] 3 pts

I'll be fine, it just sucks. Honestly there are way higher paying jobs i can get around here but none that will offer as much meaning or putting good into the world

in todays day and age planning on retiring from a specific job/place is a rarity. think of em as stepping stones. my last job i worked at i was there for 16 years (!). i walked away from it at 40 and took a 24k pay cut for a job (rarity) with a future and a pension and kickass health benefits. within 5 years ill be making more than when i left the job of 16 years... it will get better.

oh I'm sure it will, I'm not worried this is just the first time I have ever been let go so to speak. It weighs on me. Could I have done something more. you know.

It hurts. It hurts bad. For me it was being fired at two positions; the first I didn't work out because they wanted cheap and experienced (I didn't have the experience at the time) and the second was a startup which was going places. One of the co-founders decided he didn't like me, and after two weeks of work I was fired.

Each time you feel useless and you wonder what exactly you're going to do. But I'll tell you this; if you've got the mettle to meet the world (and Boobs, I know you do) another job is around the corner- especially right now.

StrangePaladin's Advice While Looking For Work:

  • Apply for unemployment IMMEDIATELY. I don't like it, but I'm of the philosophy that you've paid into it and you should get your benefits. Depending on your state, you'll need to requisition benefits each week. This leads into...
  • Keep a day-by-day job log. Write down every recruiter you talk to (their number and company name), every job you submit for (requisition code, company, position title), and each time you get an offer or are passed over. This will help to make sure that you don't double submit or miss any opportunities.
  • Start keeping a routine. Go out for a morning run/bike ride, keep up your exercise. Set aside blocks of time to look for work/call recruiters/etc and try to keep to them. This way time won't slip away so quickly.
  • Start a small project. This will help you with the extra time you have on hand. It might be something with your house, it might be learning a new code skill, but you need something to keep you occupied.

You've got this one man. We're behind you on this one. I'll be a reference for you if you like XD

Thank you for the vote of confidence, might take you up on that reference thing.

I’m sure I’ve got this and I have already applied for unemployment as distasteful as it is. I’ll have a new job in a few weeks most likely people around here are desperate for IT guys, might even start another MSP but we’ll see what happens.

Well that sucks, even more so after just moving into a new house.

Good luck on the job hunt.

I've been laid off once before.

It was during the 2008 crash.

I worked for a small health food store in San Diego, CA called Sunfood Nutrition. CEO laid off everyone in the warehouse that wasn't Mexican. Real shady business practice because I found out a few weeks later they hired all new staff... Mexicans. I'm sure they did it because the beaners were willing to work for minimum wage instead of the higher wages we were getting.

I was bitter about it for a little while and fell into a bit of a depression, and resorted to drowning my sorrows with booze.

On the plus side, I moved out of CA. Met my current wife, and we're living happily ever after.

Glad to hear it worked out in the end. It’s a sad situation but I’ve got my family, my house, and poal. What more could a guy ask for? Jobs come and go all the rest of it lasts a lifetime.

Ive been the only employee at a company that the boss decided he just didnt care to do anything to keep things afloat, so he had to shut down eventually once the only person we supplied didnt need any product for a little bit and the boss had totally failed to advertise or secure other contracts.

I saw it coming from miles away so i wasnt bummed about it.

Ive also quit a few jobs because i cant stand being surrounded by incompetence, and ive been fired for the same reason. For some reason bosses dont like it when you correct their incredibly misinformed asses in meetings, but im never goin to just sit there while my coworkers are told wrong information that could easily result in their deaths and the spread of infectious disease to the general population. So not sorry.

Finding a job can be very difficult if you have standards sometimes, often places will want you to work excessive hours with no set schedule for absolutely shit pay, which no one should ever accept doing, these jobs can be ran in a way that doesnt fuck peoples lives, but whoevers in charge is fucking retarded like normal. And i have encountered diversity quotas all over, sure sucks being a young hard working white man with no disabilities and a clean record, it means i get zero preference on anything, and you change any one aspect of what i am and those people do get preference, and special programs just for them to help them find jobs, homes, cars, pay bills, get food, everything, but as a normal and fully functional human being its expected that i compete without any of those benefits, which i do, but im not retarded so i see how my class of people are specifically being discriminated against in favor of the broken, damaged, retarded, fuckups of society.

But just keep looking, ive eventually always found something tolerable. Im certain my future is going to be in self employment though, because i have still yet to find a job where the people in charge arnt fuckin worthless

End rant

[–] 0 pt

Honestly there is a good chance I’ll end up self employed again, I’ve been there before and I did pretty well for myself. I stopped becuase of how many hours it takes to be self employed. After working for a few different places, I’ll probably end up back there due to people not being able to see what they need to for one reason or another, shit I’ve probably been that guy once or twice but I’ve always tried.

Man up. Drama is for people who are useless.

[–] 1 pt

I have manned up this time.

And the rest of your drama?

[–] 0 pt

Oh it’ll all pass eventually, a family extended family member was murdered. My house has a bunch of broken stuff, but it will all pass eventually.

[–] 0 pt

Hey, welcome back

[–] 0 pt

Being laid off sucks, but it's basically out of your hands. I know you kind of saw it coming, and I'm glad you were able to get your house first so this didn't complicate things (if you're financed). You better get a new job mofo someone has to pay for this site.

[–] 1 pt

Oh I’ll have a new job quick. I’m not worried, I’m glad I got the house too, it’s cheaper than rent so I’ve got that going for me.

Yep. A non-profit I worked at about ten years ago went under. I was the first wave of lay-offs. Everyone else was laid-off six weeks later after they all completed their annual grant reports. I had been there about three years. The org has shuttered since then.

The writing was on the wall though. We were an entirely new set of employees hired after the original's quit fot not being paid almost three months straight. The org went off of a skeleton crew for six months, then did a mass hire of us. Our CEO was literally a Hillary Clintonite Jr. (some of the things Clinton said on the campaign trail gave me shudders because it sounded so terribly familiar -- gross!). My immediate boss was a board member volunteer who wasn't even getting paid. He straight up told me and another co-worker at one of our weekly meetings two months before the lay-off to have a back up plan. I didn't of course because I was in my 20's care free and fancy.

I had given a lot to that job though. I worked through Christmas, and even when I flew home for my Grandfathers funeral worked on the flight to meet a deadline. What I learned is you are dispensable . After that I stopped putting my heart and soul into work projects. At 5pm I am done, end of story. If I can't get the project done, than the onerous is on you (as my boss) to bring in more hands and help. (In non-profit there is always more work than staff and everything is an emergency, so there will always be a reason to work longer and harder).

Anyway, to finish the story, with no plan I litterally drove to the closes university and enrolled in a random Grad program just so I could get enough loan money to live (bad, bad idea..Don't do this guys..it was the recession and NOBODY was hiring. I straight up hid in the grad program to ride out the unemployment shitstorm). I didn't think I would get in. Surprise, I did! I worked my butt off and had some incredible career opourtunities....but then I met my husband six weeks before graduation. We eloped the same weekend I graduated and he knocked me up a few weeks later. I did a few solid full-time office jobs since then, but chose to be a stay at home mom. I am thinking of going into business myself though. I have a lot of passion to work, but I don't want it to be for someone else. I want to reap the benefits. And yes, I have student loans out the ass.

[–] 1 pt

Wow that was quite the roller coaster of a story. I paid for my wife to go to school, many hours spent working shit jobs and she is now a stay at home mom and I couldn't be happier. I've knocked her up 3 times now 4 if you count the one that didn't take. I think you found your place. Women in general are happier raising kids, and there is nothing wrong with that. I am so happy I managed to find a wife who for the most part enjoys raising our kids and making our home god knows I couldn't do either. I can barely manage to keep up my study let alone a house. Good on you for taking care of your kids and make sure your husband knows you love him.

[–] 0 pt

You were too good for that place anyway!

[–] 0 pt

Yes. I worked for a company for 14 years and they moved my job to Malaysia. I worked on mainframes, and few companies in this area even had a mainframe. This has fucked up my life. I'm just now putting things back together.

[–] 0 pt

Well glad to hear you are getting back on track. My job got destroyed by the state. It’s a damn shame.

I'm a little depressed about it.

Don't man. They didn't appreciate you at that place anyways.

A smart dude like you, you'll do just fine finding another job. :)

Thanks for the vote of confidence, I’m not worried, where did you go? You were gone for like a week!
