As a kid and even just a few years ago I remember lightening bugs being yellow, almost orange, for sure 2700k or less maybe even 2000k.

I remember this from just last year.

This year they are back. But they are fucking White. Like 5000k to 6000k White, like new headlights.

Anyone else notice this?

Fireflies produce bioluminescent light, or "cold light," that typically flashes in shades of yellow, green, and orange, with some species producing red, white, or pale blue hues.

No Mandela Effect here.

Ok. Thanks! That likely answered it. We need shotguns for this. I don’t trust pale blue lighting bugs. Or lightening bugs.

I have not seen them this year yet, but those ehffers 100% are yellow. If they show up white I call fake.

Although I mean everyone does want to be white though.

So @stupidbug is now a thing?

Is that why @stupidbird retired?

The ones you are seeing are 'fellow lighting bugs'. Don't be fooled!

The white is actually because of a coating the government requires on the inside of the bulb that filters out some of the blue light. As the LED wears out that coating they'll start to lean blueish and need to be replaced.

I liked the older, yellowish ones personally. Warmer light, not as harsh.

I have never seen them where I have lived. Not the right climate or I was not out the right time of the year. They are always shown as greenish as far as I remember.

There used to be tons of lightning bugs you every year. They're few and far between now.

They were definitely yellow/greenish when I was a kid. I remember I stepped on one once and the goo was on my shoe.

Now they're much dimmer and white and I kt flash instead of dim up and down. Has to be a new species.

New species of lightening bug? What sorcery is this?

[–] 1 pt

Maybe not new, but different. The big yellow ones straight up vanished and there was nothing for awhile till these little flashers came around.

So they are killing the bugs now. Fucking great.

Round these parts, they are (were?) green - almost like the glow stick green. But they have been fewer the past years. Lighting bug fuckery afoot maybe, of another invasive species perhaps? Will ponder...

First off, they are lightning bugs not "lightening" bugs. Lightning is the electrical phenomenon that produces brilliant light and thunder. Lightening means to make something less weighty or more bright. Grammar lesson done.

This year they are back. But they are fucking White. Like 5000k to 6000k White, like new headlights.

Well you did call them "lightening" bugs so they got lighter. They changed their old incandescent bulbs out for new LED ones. Just wait till they go RGB.

It's your choice if you want to talk like a nigger. ;)

Maybe they're fireflies, or Chinese micro drones.

This is the answer I am thinking.

In Texas we have tons of lightning bugs and they glow a kind of a warm yellow color. In Washington state we have the same exact lighting bugs flying around, I have caught a couple to check them out. They do not glow at all, ever.
