If you're just starting out, just stuff them in the ground in well drained soil about 8-12" apart. Longer term, you'll want to move The crop around to different beds, not using the same bed each year, otherwise you can end up with disease issues.
In Australia your garlic may be attacked by parrots or cockatoos. They don't eat it, they are just assholes.
