plant in the fall 6 weeks before first frost for best results. 4” deep 6” between plants, i forgot row spacing… probably like 10-12”. hardneck varieties are better for colder climates, softneck fares well in warmer winters and stays fresh a little longer after harvest. the cloves from the store might be sprayed with some chemical to delay their sprouting, so you would probably do better with seed garlic from a garden store.

or throw it in the ground now and harvest and replant it as seed garlic in the fall

You're too late they have to be planted around October.

Or too early, depending on how you see the glass. ;)

Depends where you are and climate etc.

Now is garlic planting time in the Southern Hemisphere. I just put mine in last week. Planted around 150 cloves.

If you're just starting out, just stuff them in the ground in well drained soil about 8-12" apart. Longer term, you'll want to move The crop around to different beds, not using the same bed each year, otherwise you can end up with disease issues.

In Australia your garlic may be attacked by parrots or cockatoos. They don't eat it, they are just assholes.

After harvest take care it dries well. Keep it in the shadow and fresh air I'd say. If it rains a lot maybe store it at some dry place inside for some time. Otherwise it might mold. There's a way to knot them together for drying and storing so it looks kind if nice also.
