What I'm reading is that protection from UV light was more important, which makes sense because it will fuck you up in many ways. But then it leads credence to the theory that we evolved in cold environments and the people who spread out darkened in warmer areas. I can't see why you would go from being black to white in the cold as black would attract the minimal heat.
