I actually don't know what you should do. Women as a group are just bad at this sort of thing. Their great strength in one arena makes them hopelessly incompetent in others. Work out and continue building a nice life so you can replace her if she bails on you. The thing is, women are suffering from a sensory illusion. They feed information to us just like our skin, eyes and nose do. Just as those senses can sometimes feed us illusions so do our emotions. Feeling something can point to the truth or not. You have to reflect on it. Women feel deep down in their core with extreme conviction that is hard wired into their soul that if you give compassion and help to something weak and beset by trouble that it will change into something else. Something that's good and fundamentally different than it was before. Something that will ultimately love you back and care for you once the metamorphosis is seen to the end with enough caring and compassion. Women are actually correct about this. It's completely true. As long as you're talking about a human baby. Completely and totally wrong in just about every other case, but with infants and toddlers, yes it's correct. They will grow up to be an adult far more capable, intelligent, and strong than the infant they were and will care for you in your old age. We should be glad women feel this way. The problem is they feel that way in all sorts of inappropriate situations and can't tell their perception of reality is completely incorrect. You can try to tell her her feelings are misleading her.
