So I have not really used my domain for anything but email for the past 10 years but business has been slow so I have decided to build a website to get some more work going. The domain is currently with Plesk which is fine for my email needs but when it comes to building a website it really sucks, PHP is way out of date and wordpress won't work and after messing with it for 2 days I gave up because there is no easy way of getting any support.

So I signed up for new hosting at hosting dot com and it has been nothing but problems trying to get it going and it turns out they are a bunch of pajeets who I can barely talk to anyway. So I just canceled with them and I am looking for a new host to go to that is based in the US with real US workers. Any suggestions welcome.

On a side note, I am putting together a Synology NAS and it does have the capability of hosting a website and email server and I might consider doing that but I have read horror stories of the email being very difficult to manage.

Anyway, any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I already suggested that one before >> https://poal.co/s/AskPoal/780645/93d808e1-1e18-4eb9-b5b7-64085b75b999

NSFW because fuck kikes and glowniggers.

I have a vps on this host because of AOU posting about them. It's been working well for me.

it does not look like they do managed wordpress hosting and I am not proficient with all this stuff anymore. My networking and IT skills are 30 years outdated. I think I might not be able to do enough of it myself.

WP can easily be installed on any VPS with Ubuntu. It only requires a few command line to install nginx, MySQL...)

If you need help I can guide you, but you have to keep that in mind, WP (php) is a Swiss cheese in term of security. It's a pain in the ass to follow up all the security holes introduced with each new plug-ins update.

I've been looking over their site and plans and I like what I see. One thing I notice right off the bat is that they have no sales contact. Every link for their support just takes you to a login page. One thing I really want is the ability to pick up my phone and call someone that speaks English when I have a problem. I run a small construction company so nothing here is really mission critical except email, that shit just has to work. But I do want to run a small website with pictures of past jobs and pages showing what we do and some kind of contact us page where we can do some lead generation. I expect maybe a couple hundred hits per month and only 10 or 20 serious inquiries. They don't have a phone number on their support page that I can call to talk to them about my needs or call when something goes wrong. I'll look into it some more and see if I can figure it out.

As far as web design goes, all my skills are pretty far out of date but I have used WP in the past and I am guessing that I will be able to figure that out again in short order. My previous websites ran on WP and I never had any issues. Back then there were not as many threats as today though. This could be a whole new experience for me.

I'm not in a huge hurry to get this launched but I would like to get it done in the next couple of weeks or so. At least up and running good by the new year.

Thanks for taking the time to help me muddle through this!

I would not recommend hosting your own email. You're better off using a service. Too easy to get yourself on block lists and you have to keep up on the security. Not to mention if your power or internet goes out, so does your email.

Which brings up 2 of my questions: If power goes out for say a few hours and someone has emailed me will I get it later when everything is up and running again? like my voice mail on my phone? and my other question is can I host my own domain but have someone else run my email to the same dot com name?

If your mail server isn't online the sender will get a bounce back saying as much. Usually most mail servers will try to resend the message a set number of times automatically despite a bounce back.

You could host your own website at home and have someone else run the email. Just point the MX record to whatever service you want to use. They should have instructions if they're any good.

Okay,, I'll look into that,,,, MX record,,, thank you.
